Keeping up with Termites
Dear Phyllis,
I am a widow and have owned my home for more than twenty years. Last year, my gardener cut down a couple of trees and we stacked the firewood in my driveway. My son-in-law was recently visiting and thought he saw termite swarms near the firewood. He wants me to get an inspection. I am not thinking of selling anytime soon, so my question is whether or not I need to be worried about this now.

Firewood that sits for an extended period becomes moist, soft and starts to decompose. These conditions significantly increase the chances that your firewood will become infested. Always keep firewood away from your home. Elevate firewood on a metal rack or stack it on pallets raised by cinder blocks. To prevent moisture and keep it dry, cover the wood with a tarp.
Termites are very common in Southern California. They are extremely destructive pests, which cause billions of dollars in damage each year.
