How does wedding cake relate to architecture?

Wedding cake is delicate plaster work that looks like icing on a wedding cake.   Many vintage homes in our Glendale, Pasadena, Altadena and Eagle Rock neighborhoods have this detail on ceilings, walls and sometimes even on the exterior.  I have seen it most often in Spanish homes. However, this design is not limited to a specific type of architecture.   Surprisingly, this intricate detailing is not limited to grand homes. It is frequently found in vintage starter homes as well.

Do you have any resources on how this finish is created? Molded or piped in the plaster itself?

I think it is a lost art, not sure how it was created.
