Five simple ways to avoid a home burglary
With all of the crime in our Los Angeles neighborhoods and summer vacations looming, this is a timely blog post. Burglars are on the lookout for an easy target. Daytime burglaries are common in my La Canada neighborhood. Be especially cautious when the kids are still at school and when no one is likely home for lunch.
Don’t be a victim; here are five simple ways to avoid a home burglary:
1) When going out of town, ask a neighbor to park a car in your driveway, pick up mail, newspapers, etc. And unless you have a house sitter, do not post pics on social media while you are away.
2) Get an alarm, and don’t use your address as your alarm code.
3) Make it appear someone is home when you leave your home; motion lights, radios, and timers are good tools.
4) Dogs! I have two German shepherds. Not sure about getting a dog? Why not foster one from Westside German Shepard Rescue and see if you are a good match?
5) Be mindful of which vendors you have in your home. I know and trust my gardeners and all the other people who work in my home. I only hire local and, for the most part, family-owned service providers.
Be a good citizen. If you notice your neighbor’s newspapers stacking up, throw them over the fence. Keep a watchful eye on who’s coming and going in your neighborhood. Don’t be afraid to call the police (or, in La Crescenta and La Canada, the sheriff) regarding suspicious activity – better safe than sorry. Let’s all do our part in avoiding a home burglary.
